JOHN (JACK) FRANKLIN HINTON November 28, 1921 - April 29, 2002 John Franklin Hinton, 80 years of age, passed away peacefully, at his home on Monday, April 29, 2002. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Clara Hinton; and his loving wife Joan. Jack and Joan leave to cherish their memory their three daughters, Marlene Sokalski (Pat Waters), grandsons, Matthew and Iain; Kathleen Beattie (Chris), grandchildren, Graeme and Meghan; and Barbara Opyc (John), granddaughter Kathryn-Lee. Left to mourn are his sisters, Eileen Grant (Lawrence) and Kay Bathgate; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jack will also be remembered fondly by his many friends and neighbours. Jack was born in Winnipeg and grew up in West Kildonan. His schooling was interrupted when he enlisted with the Nineteen Field Battery CASF at the age of 15. Jack went on to serve with the R.C.A. (Artillery) from 1939 to 1945 and was stationed in England, France, Italy (Sicily), Holland and Germany. During this period he attained the rank of Battery Sergeant Major. Jack often spoke about and shared with family and friends the good memories he had of the time he spent serving his country. Jack served the citizens of Winnipeg for 36 years as a member of the Winnipeg Police Force. He worked in various divisions, Fraud, Robbery/Homicide and Personnel, to name a few. He was promoted to the rank of Inspector and his last years were spent developing the Community Relations Division of the Winnipeg Police Department. The Police Expo, Block Parent Program and the formation of the Rossbrook House were some of his proud accomplishments. In 1981, Jack received the Community Service Award from the City of Winnipeg and The Good Servant Award from the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews for his outstanding contribution to The Community. Following his retirement, Jack served for a period of time as a magistrate for the Province of Manitoba. Jack was a longstanding member of the Masons, Capitol Lodge Chapter. Jack married Joan Boyd in 1946 and together they had three beautiful daughters. They lived their entire life in Winnipeg and East St. Paul and enjoyed their summers at the family cottage at Echo Bay on Lake of the Woods. Jack will always be remembered by his family for his love, patience and kindness. "He is the wind beneath our wings" The family wish to extend our sincere thanks to all the wonderful staff at the Concordia Hospital, Dr. Harris and the staff of the Oncology Department, Dr. Christine Loepp, the W.R.H.A. nurses, Lovey and Caroline, and good friends, Charlie and Peggy Hill. Memorial service to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 6 at the Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
