RAYMOND LEONARD BACKMAN January 10, 1927 - May 4, 2002 Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, May 4, 2002 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Ray passed away after a long, hard battle with kidney and lung disease. Ray will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving wife Georgina of 26 years; son Ronald Backman; daughter Pamela Eggers; grandsons, Noel and Jordan Eggers; and Joan and Ken Maxwell sister-in-law and brother-in-law; as well as numerous extended family members. Ray was predeceased by his grandparents, parents and sister Ellen Backman. Ray was born in Winnipeg and spent some of his childhood years in southern Manitoba. His family returned to Winnipeg where he last attended Daniel McIntyre High School. He was employed with Air Canada in the Sheet Metal/Plumbing Division in Winnipeg and then Montreal. Early retirement from Air Canada allowed Rays love of the sign business to establish House of Letters, later to be known as A to Z signs, before fully retiring. Ray was creative not only in mind but also with his hands and was eager to share this gift with others. His love of travel allowed him to see many countries of the world. He and Georgina enjoyed summers at Spruce Sands and Mordens Meadow near Gimli. Prior to his illness, motor home travel was a great pleasure. Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing at 1:30 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Highway No. 1 East at Navin Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba, 200 - 55 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 1L8. GREEN ACRES FUNERAL CHAPEL 222-3241
