BALDUR THORARINN DANIELSON 1917 - 2002 With the same quiet resolve, dignity and strength that he lived his life, Baldur passed quietly into the night on May 5, 2002 at the age of 85. He was born February 17, 1917 at his family homestead of "Brekka" in Arborg, MB. He was predeceased by his father Gudjon; mother Lauga; brother Norman; father-in-law Thorgrimur (Grimsi) mother-in-law Gudrun (Nunna) sisters-in-law, Runa, Soley, Elleane; brothers-in-law, Helgi and Roy. He attended the Bjarmi and Ardal Schools. He worked mostly on the family farm and operated a thrashing outfit for his Uncle Ben from 1938 to 1946. During the winters of 1931-1937 in partnership with four of his uncles, he went North to Rosenberg and set up a sawmill. Four years later Baldur took over the sawmill until a forest fire destroyed the area in 1953. He operated the sawmill for 28 winters including a camp in Beaver Creek. On July 13, 1946 Baldur married Ingibjorg (Inga) Palsson. In 1964 he purchased the farm of his Uncle Eddie Gislason (Laufas). He later worked at the Arborg Co-op from 1965 until 1983 as the Lumber and Hardware Manager. He continued working on the family farm with Ingi, Glen and Robert after retirement from the Co-op until recently when poor health forced him to take a less active role. Baldur is lovingly remembered by wife Ingibjorg of nearly 56 years; children, Les (Kelly), Robert, Harold (Judy), Pat (Curtiss), Glen, and had a special place in his heart for his daughter-in-law Dianne Sigvaldson. He was a wonderful "Afi" to Justin, Mitchell, Dustin, Shawna, Stephanie, Dana, Tristan, Wesley, Erik, Erin and Jesse; brothers, Ingimar, Gudjon (Dan), Gordon (Helen) sisters, Alma (Johnny) and Gene and Uncle Gordon Gislason; brothers-in-law, Palmi, Haraldur and Steini (Inga). Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours too numerous to mention. Baldur was an avid reader and accomplished storyteller. He also enjoyed his music and would listen to Don Messers Jubilee. Dad meticulously kept a daily journal of personal and family activities as well as the weather. He had a strong interest in history and would often share his vast knowledge. He was extremely resourceful and enterprising, fixing and operating equipment in his sawmill and farm. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff of the Arborg Hospital and homecare services for their care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the Arborg Community Hall on Friday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Stefan Jonasson and Rev. Otto Christensen will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg or to a charity of choice. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I have only recently recognized that Baldur and I were relatives. Distant, or not, Baldur's histories of the Icelandic migration to Canada, and the people who came are some of the most accurate I have read. I am so sorry for your loss. When you lost Baldur, we lost a lot of our heritage. I wish I had known him personally. My best to you all. What a marvelous son, father and AFI he must have been.
