MARY (WIENS) POLTON 1918 - 2002 Our mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend, Mary Polton, (nee Wiens), formerly of Starbuck, MB, went to her heavenly rest on May 5, 2002. Mary will be greatly missed by her loving son Norman; her brothers, Henry (Mary), Herman (Agnes) and John (Barbara) Wiens; her sisters, Tina Wiebe, Agatha (Martin) Broesky and Anne Klassen, and their families. Mary was predeceased by her husband Wilfred Polton; her parents Peter and Katherina Wiens; brothers, Benjamin and Peter Wiens; and her sisters, Lena (Helen) Gerbrandt and Sarah (Sally) Kornelsen. Mary worked at many jobs and professions but the two she spoke of the most often were working as a nanny for the Livingston family in Starbuck and her last job before retirement as a V.O.N. care worker. Mary was a dedicated "knitter" for Koats for Kids, completing countless mitts and scarves for Winnipeg children including 30 plus sets ready for the winter of 2002-03. She also was an avid reader which led to many interesting conversations with her friends and family. Mary never forgot her early farming days. Proof of her green thumb could be seen in her array of beautiful violets and the floral arrangements she grew on her balcony. Many heartfelt thanks to the staff at Riverview 3 East, the 5th floor of the Grace Hospital, the Chaplains of both hospitals, Mark Shepard, Chris Kyle and the palliative home care team. Marys family will be eternally grateful to all who provided countless hours of loving care and to those who spent overnights with Mary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Way Koats for Kids, 3rd Flr., 5 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2T4, or CancerCare Manitoba, ON109 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, in Marys memory. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with visitation being held one half hour prior to the service time. Colonel Maxwell Ryan will be officiating. Interment will take place on Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Please meet at the funeral home prior to interment.
