BARBARA ANN JOHNSTON (nee STEWART) Peacefully on May 9, 2002, at the Golden Links Lodge. Barbara was predeceased by her husband David Johnston in 1996 and by her son David Stewart in 1999. Barbara joyfully celebrated her 90th birthday on May 4 with her many friends and family members. She was born in Scotland in 1912, immigrating to Canada at the age of 18 months. She lived in St. Vital from 1921 until her passing and enjoyed her lifetime involvement in church (St. Vital United), community, family, politics and every change along the way. She is survived by sons, Gordon (Eloise), Brian (Charlotte), Bruce (Laura) daughter-in-law Joan; and daughter Barbara Ann Balshaw and Michael; sister Mary (Polly) Camrye and Maurice and many nieces and nephews. Her treasured offspring are the 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren of whom she was so proud. The family extends special thanks to the caring homecare workers who helped Barbara to stay on her own the extra years, first in her home and then with family before entering personal care homes in 2000. The family also thanks the caring and the supportive staff of Vista Park Lodge and finally of Golden Links Lodge, where she joined her longtime friends, Nelda Hewitt and Gladys Dewar. "Thanks be to God for a long and happy life." Services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Vital United Church, 937 St. Marys Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Vital United Church, West Hawk Lake United Church or the Firefighters Burn Fund.
