ROY FREDRICK COULTER It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Roy Frederick Coulter, much loved husband of his wife, Rena at St. Boniface Hospital on May 10, 2002 after a battle with melanoma. Roy was born in Winnipeg on August 28, 1926. He attended local elementary schools and Kelvin High School. He enrolled in Engineering at the U. of M. After two years he transferred to the U. of B.C. where he completed his degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1948. He began his career with Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co., in Flin Flon and worked in several Managerial and Superintendent positions before retiring in 1982. He was proud of having received the Gold Medal from the Engineering Institute of Canada in 1963, when he presented a paper in Ottawa on the development of metals at H.B.M. & S. Following his retirement the family settled in Winnipeg. Roy met Norma Cook in Flin Flon and they were married in 1949. They had two children, Jill and Kip. Norma lost her battle with cancer and died in 1969. Roy was fortunate in meeting Rena Brothers and her sons, Kevin and Derek. Roy and Rena were married in 1973 and a new family was born. Roy was predeceased by his parents, William and Sally Coulter; two brothers, Eugene and Joe; brother-in-law Wilf Vermette; and niece Lori Phillips. Left to mourn his loss along with his wife Rena are his children, daughter Jill (James) Salamon and children, Blake, Caitlin, Allison, Kris, Charlotte; son Kip (Karen) and children, Jessica, Carley, Riley, Kayla; stepsons, Kevin (Dianne) Brothers and Derek (Liz) Brothers and children, Lindsay and Melanie; sisters, Eileen (Doug) Phillips and Betty Vermette along with numerous nieces and nephews and relatives who all thought Uncle Roy was "real neat". Roy was a private man who looked for the beauty and simplicity in everyday life. His two special loves were music and golf. His rich, sweet baritone enriched many choirs and choral presentations. He sang with the Flin Flon Glee Club and was a wonderful Professor Higgins when they presented "My Fair Lady". He also sang with the University Bison Mens Choir. He belonged to the Wildewood Club and valued the friendship of his foursome that became a familiar sight on the golf course. During the winter he was able to golf everyday at the Boca Dunes Country Club which was adjacent to the family condo in Boca Raton, FL. Roy, along with his family, would like to thank Dr. Wong, Dr. Coates, Dr. Cooke for their care and attention. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at CancerCare and the Palliative Wing on the 8th Floor at St. Boniface Hospital. Thanks to friends and relatives for their many acts of kindness. No words can express how much it has been appreciated. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service held on Thursday, May 16 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Vital United Church, 937 St. Marys Rd. for all who would care to attend. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, 8A-409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6 or to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9.
