He was an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba and was on active staff at the Health Sciences Centre and Childrens Hospital. One of his favourite pastimes was teaching students and residents. He was one of two founding members of the "Surgery Can Be Fun Club" and for many years provided pathology sessions for the residents. As the recipient of "Staffman of the Year" and the Dept. of Anaesthesias "Surgeon of the Year" awards, his passion for teaching was recognized. He served on, and was Chair of, numerous University and Hospital Committees including terms as the President of the Medical Staff of Childrens Hospital, President of the Medical Staff Council at Health Sciences Centre, Head of the Section of General Surgery (Health Sciences Centre), Director of the Day Surgery Program and Chair of the Planning Committee (Health Sciences Centre). He loved his years as a general and pediatric surgeon in private practice. One of Freds greatest joys was time spent at his lake cottage in Farlane, ON with his children and grandchildren. Fred was an honourable and compassionate man. He was generous with his time and was always willing to listen and help people with their difficulties. The care of his family and patients was the core of his life. This remarkable man will be missed.
