Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEARL SHELDON MATTHEWS Following a long fulfilled life on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at the Lion Prairie Manor, Earl Sheldon Matthews, a longtime resident of Portage la Prairie, widower of the late Annabelle Matthews, passed away at the age of 103 years. Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, on Friday, May 17 at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Earl was born on May 5, 1899, son of the late Fred and Maude Matthews, at Elgin County, ON. In 1939 he married Annabelle Edgeworth and they resided in Portage. He was employed with Winnipeg Hydro in 1950 for a short time before he became self-employed as a cream route driver. He then became employed with the City of Portage at the water treatment plant, retiring in 1964. Earl was a member of the Masonic Lodge Assiniboine No. 7. Earl enjoyed the great outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Later he enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, to the very last. He often enjoyed sitting in the sunshine under his mountain ash. Predeceased by his wife Annabelle; three brothers, Colburn, Gordon and Kenneth; one sister Lewella Hutchinson; and several nieces and nephews. Earl will be sadly missed by many Masonic brothers and his special friend Roy Watson. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation Inc., 24-9th St. N.E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3V4.
