RUBY LEONA BAEKELAND (JOHNSTON) April 16, 1938 - May 15, 2002 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Ruby, at the St. Boniface General Hospital, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Left to mourn her passing is her loving husband of 42 years Gus; three children, Richard, Lisa and Leanne; and two very special grandchildren, Andrew and Hayley. She will also be lovingly remembered by her mother-in-law Eva Baekeland; brother Bob; sisters, June and Dorothy; sister-in-law Rena Parker and husband Jim; brother-in-law Roger Baekeland and wife Lee; aunt Martha Gottwald; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruby was born April 16, 1938 in Sprague, MB, and lived her life in Winnipeg. She married Gus on August 29, 1959 and together they raised their children in Transcona, where they lived for almost 40 years. Her greatest joy in life was the birth of her grandchildren, Andrew and Hayley. Ruby loved watching them grow, enjoying their activities, cheering their accomplishments and sharing with them her love of life. We would like to express our thanks to Drs. Pilat and Harris; the entire staff at St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and kindness; Eva Baekeland and Cam and Myrna King for their unwavering devotion to Ruby; and the many relatives, friends and neighbours who offered their love and support during this very difficult time. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m., at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, with Fr. Ed Bonin officiating. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made in Rubys memory to Rossbrook House or the St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Unit (Patient Comfort Fund). Arrangements entrusted to Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., 222-6677.

  • Hello to the family of Ruby and Gus. You don't know me but we are related. I was just going through my dad's old address book and I knew he had a cousin Ruby who predeceased him in Manitoba but didn't know her last name. Voila! here it was, and I googled it and found your parent's obits. My grandpa, Alexander Oelke, had two sisters, Martha and Erna, who moved to Manitoba. I knew one married a Johnston. So I'm thinking that makes Erna and her husband your grandparents. There was an aunt Martha on both my grandparents sides, so it has gotten a bit confusing to me, but I see an aunt Martha is mentioned in your mum's obit, so I am convinced she is my Grandpa's other sister, and she must have been alive when this was written. I hadn't realized till the last few years that Martha and Erna were young children when they came to Canada. I have now seen photos that my uncle Harold (also deceased and a cousin to your mum) left me. I have been doing some work on geneology and hope to do more once I retire at the beginning of next year. I have started an Oelke family tree on Ancestry but have not really filled it in. Do any of you have Ancestry accounts or family trees made up? If so, I would really like to see what you have and can contribute what I know. I know my dad enjoyed writing to his cousin Ruby and I wish I had somehow gotten to meet her and the rest of you. I think I did find a Johnston on Ancestry that I suspect is a relative, but like me, he probably doesn't check his ancestry account often and may not have seen the message I left some time ago. I have been trying to find out more about your side of the family. Please accept my belated condolences on losing your parents, my husband and I are in the same boat now. You folks are probably our age, given that your parents married around the same time as ours. I would love if you would keep in touch. Thank you. - Posted by: Diana Louise Oelke Cook (distant cousin) on: Aug 13, 2022
