STEVE HEGION Steve Hegion passed away on May 2, 2002 in the Virden District Hospital, Virden, MB. He was born on January 29, 1920 on the family farm atl Rouleau, SK. He was raised in Saskatchewan. When the Second World War broke out, Steve enisted and his military career lasted five years. He was wounded in Germany while on active duty with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons Regiment. In 1946, Steve enrolled in the engineering faculty at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science, as a Professional Geologist and Petroleum Engineer. After graduation, Steve and Grayce moved back to their beloved Saskatchewan and the new oil fields. In 1954, they moved to Virden and have resided there since being involved with the oil industry for nearly 50 years. Steve resided in Virden for 48 years. During his time in Virden, Steve formed Hegion & Associates, Milestone Petroleum and Copperhead Oil Company. He served as mayor of Virden for five years, president of Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, Manitoba vice-president of the Canadian chamber, president of Manitoba Tourism and president of Virden Lions Club, a member of the Board of Regents of Brandon University, he also gave of himself to the mining and petroleum advisory council of Manitoba and to three levels of government in the Tourist Industry of Canada for many years. He enjoyed many years of travelling including trips to California, the Caribbean, Washington, Arizona and the east and west coasts of Canada. They also enjoyed many years at their summer home at Clear Lake. He belonged to the United Church. Steve was a Lions Club member for many years and President for two years, being one of the Founders of the Virden Branch. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. From 1971 to 1975, Steve was the mayor of Virden. He was predeceased by his parents. Steve will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. He will be remembered forever by his beloved wife Grayce of 53 years; his children, son Robert (Diana) Hegion of Kelowna, BC, daughter Mary Jo (Don) ORourke of Rapid City, MB, grandchildren, Jessica and Taylor Hegion, Matthew and Becky ORourke. He is survived by his brother Paul (Mary), many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. The funeral service took place on Monday, May 6, 2002 at the G.R. Carscadden Funeral Chapel, Virden. Rev. Trevor Rutley officiated. All those in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. G.R. Carscadden Funeral Chapel, Virden in care of arrangements.
