Date of Passing: May 20, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryM. CHARLOTTE FRASER R.N. With fortitude and dignity Charlotte Fraser moved ahead on May 20, 2002. Born in 1915, she was raised in Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg. Charlotte graduated in 1938 as a Registered Nurse from training at the Misericordia Hospital. In the years that followed, she was a ward nurse in hospitals in Wainwright, AB and at Hudson, ON. She was a nurse and supervisor at the Convalescent and Grace Hospitals in Winnipeg. She joined the City of Winnipeg Public Health Department in the early 1950s and was a Public Health nurse in the north end, retiring as a Supervisor in 1978. Along the way she earned a certificate in Public Health nursing from the University of Manitoba. Charlotte combined her career as a nurse with motherhood and community service. Her grateful children, Heather Kurtz of Winnipeg and Paul Fraser of Vancouver had every advantage she could give them growing up. Charlotte was devoted to them, just as she was to her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Charlotte was active in community service in Winnipeg. She was a faithful volunteer at the CNIB, Cancer Society and the north end YMCA, where she ran a successful childrens drama group. After 63 prairie winters Charlotte retired to the island of Maui where she lived happily for 18 years. While on Maui she was active in church and community. She spent countless hours serving and cooking for charitable events, as well as making and distributing dressings for the Cancer Society. She became involved in the university extension program at the Maui Community College and her friends and family were delighted when she was named Woman of the Year for her efforts in the 1980s. For many years, Charlotte was an active and loyal member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past matron of Rainbow Chapter in Winnipeg and a past matron and life member of the Maui Chapter. She returned home to Canada in 1996 to be near her family and to enjoy her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as the friendship of her beloved late brother Same Payne, her faithful and caring cousin William Paul and her extended family of nieces and nephews. Charolotte had a legion of good friends and colleagues. She had a long and useful life, making a difference for those less fortunate. Among other things, she was a foster parent and care provider to the elderly. Her generosity of spirit and her understanding of the human condition is her legacy. Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. The Rev. Pat Wotton will conduct the service.
