DR. GERHARD (GEORGE) FRIESEN Born June 29, 1923 in Winkler, MB, died April 14, 2002 at the age of 78 years. Predeceased by his first wife Ellen and brother Isaac. Survived by his second wife Trudy; sister Susie; brother Harry; daughters, Lenore, Marianne, Susanna (Shawn) son Carl (Robyn) and four grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Ellen and Zoe. George graduated from the University of Manitoba and practised in general medicine in southern Manitoba for six years. He then did his surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he also received his Master of Science in Surgery from the University of Minnesota. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Surgery. After completing his surgical training he practised for six years in Trail, BC before moving to Victoria in 1969. He was an active surgeon in Victoria until 1990. He was a keen golfer at the Victoria Golf Club. George had a hole-in-one on the eight hole after he had taught himself to golf one-armed, following left-arm paralysis in 1990. George was a proud and responsible man who cared deeply for his family. He thought medicine was the most significant profession in the world. Cremation. Private memorial service followed. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made in aid of junior golf development to the Victoria Golf Club or the Salvation Army.
