Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUBY GUTKIN It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ruby Gutkin on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, just prior to her 80th birthday. Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Norman on February 1, 2000, and by her parents, Fanny and Ben Aisanstat. She was the loving mother to Caryl Kochen of Vancouver, Lori Merson (Sam) of Toronto, and Paula Emond (Allan) of Winnipeg; and grandmother to Michael, Karlee and Avery. She is also survived by three sisters, Sarah Karasick, Sophie Kohn of Calgary, Lilly Simmons and loved by many nieces and nephews. Ruby was born in Russia on July 4, 1922 and moved to Alberta as a young child. She was educated in Calgary and Edmonton, having obtained her business certificate. She moved to Winnipeg as a young woman where she met and married Norman Gutkin on September 11, 1946. They worked side by side in business until Ruby decided to devote her life to her children. The "Martha Stewart" of her time, Ruby enjoyed cooking, baking, needlepoint, knitting and ceramics. The funeral was held graveside at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, on Friday, May 24. Pallbearers were Michael Kochen, Sam Merson, Allan Emond, Marvin Hendin, Donald Gutkin, Ted Searle. Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Pullan and Syd Hendin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
