Sam worked responsibly and diligently throughout his life. He earned his C.P.A. diploma in the 1930s and practised his profession until well after his 70th Birthday. For a good portion of his working life, he held two jobs. He was a founding member of the Herzlia Adas Yeshurim Synagogue and in his later years, a member of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Sam and Pauline spent 42 happy years at their summer cottage in Gimli. He enjoyed his time there out-of-doors fixing and puttering in his yard and fishing at the Gimli Pier. He was a devoted family man who loved to read and to listen to his classical and liturgical music. He was quiet and self reliant but could always be counted upon to help others when asked. Funeral services were held at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Friday, May 24, 2002 with interment at Bnai Abraham Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers were his brothers-in-law Bill and Ben Shell. Shiva was observed at 402-200 Tuxedo Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Israel Emergency Campaign, C/O The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg/UJA, C300 123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg, MB, R3N 2B2, 477-7424. 90 years he spent with us 90 - a large milestone After 90 years he broke off from us In peace, quiet and sleep. Enriched - what I call his life Full of quality, love and youth Near the end of the road, not so Illness, pain and gloom. 10 years I shared with him 10 years of joy and family I was hit with shock when the news arrived Of the death of my Zaida Sam. Zaida Sam - a true gentleman He battled through all he could And left us all with memories He is in my heart for good. - Ethan Calof
