Date of Passing: May 17, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. VLADIMIR F. BACHYNSKI Dr. Vladimir F. Bachynski passed away May 17, 2002, a month before his 93rd birthday, at the Holy Family Nursing Home, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife Natalka in 1993; and his parents, Victor and Antonina; and brother Paul. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Boris and John; daughter-in-law Marte; and grandchildren, Lauren, Nicole, and Mark. Dad was born in 1909, in Piznanka Hetmanska, Western Ukraine. As a boy, he endured the hunger and hardship of the First World War, before immigrating at age 12 to settle on a homestead farm in Punnichy, SK. Dedicated to hard work and his studies, he completed nine grades in four years, to attend Nutona Collegiate Institute (Saskatoon), and the University of Manitoba. He graduated from medicine in 1935. In the same year, he married his one true love, Natalka Semeniuk, and was rewarded with the birth of his sons, Boris in 1936 and John in 1938. Dr. Val practised medicine with passionate devotion for 50 years, until he retired in 1985. In the intervening years he completed post-graduate studies in surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University, and the University of Minnesota, as well as fellowships with the College of Surgeons and the American Geriatric Society. He was a founding member of the College of Family Practice of Canada, President of the General Practitioners Association of Manitoba, and served on the Board of Directors at St. Boniface Hospital. He was honoured by appointments too numerous to mention, but even more so by the affection and regard of his patients and colleagues. Dads commitment to the Ukrainian people saw him Founder of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, Co-founder and Honorary Life Member of the Ukrainian Professional & Businessmens Club, and Co-founder of the Sons of the Ukrainian Pioneers. He directed successful investment companies (Settlers Mortgage and Savings, East-West Investments), a medical group facility (Broadway Medical Group), and a business premise on Portage Avenue. Dad enjoyed golf, curling, photography, hunting and travel; he was a long-standing member of the Niakwa Golf Club, Winnipeg Winter Club, and enjoyed his summers at his family cottage at Winnipeg Beach and fall duck hunting with his sons at his lodge in Netley Marsh. Travel to many international surgical conventions around the world occupied much of Vals and Nats pre and post-retirement years. Dads kind concern and gentle but strong determination to succeed was apparent to the very end. His family send a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Holy Family Nursing Home who provided him with compassionate care and understanding. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 27 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
