JOHN BENSON (BEN) ORVIS Peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2002, Ben Orvis, aged 85 years of Grand Marais, MB, passed away at the Riverview Health Centre with his family at his side. Dad was born in Balsam Bay on May 2, 1917. He commercially fished Lake Winnipeg until enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1939. He served overseas landing in Normandy in June of 1944. He and Mom married in 1946 and lived in Grand Marais all their lives. After the war, Dad again commercially fished and was later hired by Abitibi Paper Mill, working in the camps until he retired. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen on May 13, 1992; a son Kurt in 1964; his parents, Alice and Isaac, five brothers and one sister. Dad will be lovingly missed by his family, Roberta Carriere (Roger) and Walter (Colleen) of Winnipeg, Patrick and Marlin of Naniamo, Earl (Judy), Ronnie (Susie), Ross and Penny of Grand Marais, Janice Isopp (Johann) of Toronto, Bradley (Karen) of Elizabeth, AB and Blaine (Denise) of Balsam Bay; grandchildren, Leah, Lori, Vince, Jason, John, Sheila, Erich, Bernard, John B., Sheldon, Chris, Laura, Cara, Mandy, Garrett, Whitney, Wade and Adam, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank and Ruben and one sister Rose. Dad loved his crib games, crosswords, fishing, trapping, hunting and gardening. He had a great sense of humour and will be remembered for his humourous poetry. Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31 at 3:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with viewing one hour prior to the service. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will form a Guard of Honour and hold graveside rites. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Sheldon, John, Garrett, Wade, Jay and Vincent. Interment to follow in St. Judes Cemetery, Grand Marais. A very special thanks to Riverview Health Centre for making Dads last days more comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
