HERBERT ADOLPH GABRIEL On Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Portage District General Hospital, Herbert Adolph Gabriel of Portage la Prairie, beloved husband of Evelyn Gabriel passed away at the age of 87 years. Funeral service will be held at the Omega Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 1 at 1:30 p.m. with the Pastor Les Kingdon officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Herb was born on August 22, 1914 son of Adolph and Emily Gabriel at Forest Park, IL. At an early age the family moved to Drumheller, AB where he was raised and received his education. In 1932 he moved to Poplar Point and farmed in the area and in 1944 he purchased his own farm. In September, 1946 he married Evelyn McKinstry and they continued to farm at Poplar Point until their retirement in 1978. They resided on the farm until they moved to Portage la Prairie in 1999. Herb was a member of the Poplar Point Alliance Church, was an active member of the Poplar Point community and served as a trustee on the Poplar Point School Board for several years. Over the years he participated in baseball, hockey and curling and always maintained a keen interest in the farm and agriculture. Predeceased by his three brothers, Arnold, Arthur, Ewald; two sisters, Eleanor Christie and Evelyn Gabriel; he leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 55 years, Evelyn; his two sons, Brian (Jill) and two grandchildren, Lisa and Derek of North Vancouver, Brent (Darlene) and grandson, Jay of Winnipeg; one daughter Lorraine Gabriel of Winnipeg. Also surviving are three sisters, Elsie Coad of Calgary, Iona Blaney of Calgary, Dorothy (Allister) Morden of Morden, MB; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of their choice. Arrangements are in care of the Omega Funeral Home.
