WALTER GEORGE CARR 1912 - 2002 On May 22, 2002, George Carr passed away peacefully in Neepawa, MB at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Mabel (Harvey) sister-in-law Beryl Wilson (Desjardin) of Pilot Mound; and nephew Harold Carr of Edmonton. George was predeceased by his brother Harold in 1940, mother Margaret in 1964, and his father Walter in 1971. George was born on June 4, 1912 in Winnipeg. He moved with his parents to farm at Glenella in 1913 and later to Kelwood in 1929. George began farming on his own after completing his education at Manitoba Agricultural College. In 1935, he married the Glenallan schoolteacher, Mabel Harvey. Perhaps with her influence, education became Georges passion. He spent 19 years on the local and regional school boards as well as the Provincial Board of Trustees (MAST), the Teachers Retirement Board, and the Manitoba Advisory Board on Education. George and Mabel farmed in the Kelwood area until retirement in 1992. They then moved to Neepawa where he and Mabel were among the first residents of the Elks Manor. Later George and Mabel moved to East View Lodge. George was a dedicated supporter of the rural community of Kelwood. He worked tirelessly to maintain the railway and grain elevator in Kelwood; he assisted with establishing a community garage, and supported the Manitoba Farmers Union. George also served on the Pool Elevator Board, and was a long time volunteer at the Kelwood Community Centre. George loved sports especially curling and baseball. He played, coached, and organized for many years, and in later years served as an umpire. A visit to George and Mabels farm home was a summer treat and a learning experience for several of their nephews and nieces. They have fond memories of Uncle George and his patient instruction about driving horses, tractors and trucks. Georges love of the outdoors, his animals, farming and farm life was an inspiration to all. His special joy and laughter at the antics of young kittens and calves will always be remembered. The funeral was held on Saturday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall in Kelwood. The service was conducted by Rauland Ploss. Pallbearers were Jim Johnstone, Lorne McNarland, Richard Desjardins, Erwin Sawatzky, Fred Gabler and Russ Newton. George was laid to rest beside his brother in the Kelwood Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or a charity of ones choice. Dobchuk Funeral Home, McCreary entrusted with arrangements.
