JAMES EDWARD (TED) FLEMING 1918 - 2002 It is with deep sadness that we wish to announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, James Edward Fleming, beloved husband of Ida Fleming, at Beacon Hill Lodge on Friday, May 31, 2002. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife of 57 years, Ida; his son Thompson and daughter-in-law Willa, of Snow Lake, MB; his daughter Patricia Nielsen and husband Vic, of Calgary, his daughter Janice Lynch and husband Steve, also of Calgary; his six grandchildren, Michael Fleming and wife Miranda, Scott Fleming, David and Erin Nielsen, and Katie and Sean Lynch. Ted grew up in Winnipeg, briefly living in Moose Jaw, attended Gordon Bell High School, and before enlisting in the RCAF in the spring of 1940, worked for the Manitoba Pool Elevators. He completed 34 bombing trips over occupied Europe, and on completing his tour of Ops with the Alouette Squadron stayed on in England as an instructor. He met and married Ida in England while she was on duty at 6 Group with the RCAP-WDS. After discharge from the RCAF, Ted was employed by the Canadian Immigration Department and spent 32 years with it, ending his career as Manager of the Winnipeg Immigration Centre. During his long life Ted had many interestscurling, gardening, square dancing, cross country skiing and above all, travelling. He and Ida managed to see more than half the world, especially after his retirement. When his children were young he took them on many camping trips throughout Manitoba, and occasionally all parts of Canada. He was a member of the Optimists Club for a time, took an active part in his Community Club. He attended Westminster Church when he and Ida made their home in St. Vital. He was a lifetime member of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association and a member of RUSI. He will be remembered as a brave, honourable and kindly man, a generous and loving father and grandfather, respected by all who knew him. He is leaving a vast hold in the lives of those he has left behind. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 6, Regents Park United Church, 613 St. Marys. Interment will follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. We would like to extend our thanks to the Geriatric 4th floor ward of St. Boniface Hospital where he received marvellous care, and to the 4th floor of Beacon Hill Lodge where the staff treated him with much kindness. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation in memory of Ted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of ones choice.
