BARBARA BETTY GUNTNER Peacefully on June 2, 2002, at the Riverview Health Centre, Betty passed away in her 80th year, with her family by her side. Betty was born, raised and educated in Devizes, Wiltshire, England. At the outbreak of the Second World War she joined the Air Force as a radio dispatcher and was posted in various locations in England and Scotland. It was during her military service that Betty met her beloved Tadeusz (Ted) Guntner, and they married while still in England. Betty and Ted continued to reside in England as the children started arriving. In 1952 Betty and Ted, with their children, decided to start a new life in Canada, living first in Kenora for a year, then moving to Winnipeg where they set up house in St. James and raised their family. Betty loved her life in Canada, but England was never very far from her heart. Betty was employed at Sears for over 20 years, first as a sales clerk and then as an office supervisor until her retirement. After taking an early retirement from Sears, Betty was able to spend her leisure years traveling on numerous occasions to visit family and friends in England, Australia and the USA, and as well to enjoy the cottage at Caddy Lake that she and Ted had built together. Betty also was active with the Over 60s Club at the St. James Legion and with the Deer Lodge Ladies Bowling League, and made many lasting friendships through these associates. Betty was predeceased by her beloved Ted in 1971. She is survived by her four children, Michael (Alice) of Hudson, QC, Rhoda Eadie (Jae) of Winnipeg, John (Colleen) of Chilliwack, BC, and Ken (Jane) of Keewatin, ON. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael (Fabie) and Christy Guntner of Hudson, Donna Eadie of Winnipeg; and by her great-grandson Samuel Guntner of Hudson. Betty is also survived by her siblings, Rosemary Derksen of Berkeley Vale, Australia, Bobbie Werner of West Orange, USA, John (Liz) and Christine Chandler of Devizes, UK; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Bettys life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate St., with Canon John Caird officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful if friends would make donations in Bettys memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Manitoba Division, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 1S6. The family extends its sincere and grateful thanks to Bettys many friends for their warmth and companionship over the years, and in particular for their visits and words of comfort during Bettys illness. Particular acknowledgment is made of Bettys special friend Earl Hiscox, who became her dancing, dining and traveling partner during the past few years and whose companionship and friendship was much appreciated and enjoyed by our mom. We also wish to sincerely thank the health care professionals for their excellent care, and the wonderful staff at the Riverview Health Centre for making Bettys final days peaceful and comfortable. Mere words cannot adequately express how grateful we are for the care you provided to our mom. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1858 Portage Avenue, 949-4872
