CONSTANCE MELLOR RIDDELL (nee Whitworth) 1922 - 2002 It is with our deepest love and great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother on Thursday, May 30, 2002 in her 81st year at the Grace General Hospital. Constance will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by her loving husband Laurence of over 58 years; daughters, Kathleen Colquhoun (Joe), Janet McCombe (Robyn) grandchildren, Ian, Emily and Georgina Colquhoun, and Christopher, Graeme and Lauren McCombe. She was predeceased by her parents, Hilton and Ingebjord (Emma) Whitworth; father and mother-in-law, George and Martha Riddell and sister-in-law Pat Riddell. We pray she is joyfully reunited with them now. Constance was very proud of her English and Icelandic heritage. Constance was born April 24, 1922 and grew up in Fort Rouge attending Lord Roberts and Kelvin High School. One of her fondest memories of her school years was being chosen Valedictorian for the graduating class at Lord Roberts. Constance and Laurence met through their Anglican Young Peoples Association in 1939 and have been together ever since. They were married November 13, 1943 at St. Albans Anglican Church. She worked in the circulation department of the Winnipeg Free Press where her parents had met each other years before while employed there. Constance enjoyed and excelled for many years at bowling at the Winnipeg Winter Club and the Empress Bowling Lanes. Till the time of her death she played bridge with many close friends of the neighbourhood bridge group that she joined in the late 60s. She still had a close relationship with friends from her youth which she cherished, and especially enjoyed being able to spend time with her childhood friend Dorothy while at her summer place in Gimli. Her devotion to her family was central in her life. She delighted in watching her children and then her grandchildren grow, helping to provide them with a strong foundation. She was happiest when surrounded by family who will never forget her. The family would like to acknowledge the care Constance received from the doctors, nurses and staff of 3 West of the Grace Hospital. There were jewels among them! In accordance with Constances wishes, a funeral service will not be held in her memory, however, cremation has taken place following an intimate family ceremony officiated by Rev. Canon Jack Johnstone. A private interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Garden, 4000 Portage Ave. Donations in Constances memory may be made to the charity of your choice, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8. Arrangements entrusted to: NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200 "Backward, turn backward, Oh Time, in thy flight. Make me a child again, just for tonight!" from Rock Me To Sleep by Elizabeth Akers Allen, 1832-1911.
