CHRISTENA BLACK Christena Black of Pilot Mound, MB passed away at Prairie View Lodge on Sunday, June 2, 2002 at the age of 91 years. She is lovingly remembered by her son Barry (Linda) Black and her daughter Darlene (Bryan) Bowden; grandchildren, Marny (Keith) Dyck, Trevor (Shannon) Bowden; and great-grandchildren, Nathan and Konrad Dyck and Karissa Bowden. Christena was predeceased by her husband of 46 years George; her daughter-in-law Marilyn Black; and her sister Georgena Cruikshank. Christena was born on April 17, 1911 in Guernsey, SK. She moved with her parents, Archie and Hannah McQuarrie to the family farm in Dry River in 1915. Christena attended school at Dry River, Pilot Mound and then Morden for her Grade 12. After going to Normal School in Winnipeg and receiving her teaching certificate, she taught at Rosehill School and then Two Creeks School near Miniota. Christena met George Black while teaching at Two Creeks and they were married on July 9, 1941. In the fall of 1945, they moved to Dry River to take over the McQuarrie farm. Christena gave up her teaching career at this time to raise a family. Christena and George farmed at Dry River until 1973 when they retired to Pilot Mound. In 1966, Christena was persuaded to return to teaching, first at Londesboro and then at Glenora and finally retiring in 1975. She enjoyed teaching and found it a very rewarding profession. Christena also had many hobbies, knitting, crocheting, quilting, crafts, collecting antiques and of course her doll collection. She was an avid sports fan and had her favourite teams which she watched on TV. Christena also loved to travel and had many wonderful trips all over the world in conjunction with the Womens Institute. She also belonged to Queen Mary Rebekah Lodge, the Horticultural Society, and the UCW for many years. The family would like to thank the staff at Prairie View Lodge for the gracious care given to Christena during her time there. In lieu of flowers, as expressions of sympathy, donations in Christenas memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8.
