MARY CALICH Peacefully, at the age of 98 years, on June 7, 2002, Mary Calich passed away at Park Manor Personal Care Home in Transcona. Mom will be lovingly and with deep sorrow remembered by her son John and his loving caring wife Anita; grandchildren, Fred, Norma Dell (Bill), Michael (Adriane), and Richard; great-grandchildren, Joel, Dean, Marta, Hannah and Andrew, who all adored their Baba and will miss her greatly. Mary is also survived by sister-in-law, Helen and her son Eddie Sokal of Transcona. Eddie helped his Auntie for many years in many ways when she lived alone in her home. She was predeceased by her husband Mile in 1978; and by sons, George and Rade; and brothers, John and Steve. She was born Mary Sokal in Ukraine, Celo Dohy, Povit Trambolia, on October 10, 1903 and came to Canada in 1923. She married Mile Calich in 1926 and moved to Transcona, where she remained ever since. It took so little to please Baba, and to bring her joy and laughter. She loved her family, her humble home on Pandora Ave., and her huge garden. She always gave of herself to everyone, and asked for nothing in return. During the great depression, son John, who was a small boy at the time, remembers how she never turned away the young men who were crisscrossing the country in railroad freight cars in search of work. Her home being near the railroad yards, many would knock at her door begging for food. Mom had little herself, but shed always fixed them something to eat. To her they were not "tramps" or "hoboes" but desperate young men in need of help. Thats the kind of grand lady she was. The family would like to offer sincere thanks and deep gratitude to the entire staff of Park Manor, who all loved their Baba, and cared for her as if she was their own. We know that Baba loved them all in return. The family also gives special thanks to neighbours, Ken and Doris Cox, and Ann Rotondo for all the concern and help they selflessly gave when Mary was in need. Flowers are gratefully declined. A family service will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Park Manor Personal Care Home, 301 Redonda St. with Pastor John Diamond officiating. Burial to follow at the Transcona Cemetery. Transcona Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
