RUTHA WILSON 1899-2002 On June 6, 2002, Rutha Wilson passed away peacefully at the Tuxedo Villa. She is survived by her nephew Gary Wilson, nieces, Winnie of Boerne, TX, and Sheila of Applevalley, CA and Joanne of Langley, BC; Keith of Kapaskasing, ON and Ted of Herst, ON as well as numerous other relatives. Rutha was predeceased by her father and mother Thomas Bell Wilson and Henrietta Wilson as well as by her brother Hubert B. Wilson in 1977. Rutha was born in Baldur, MB in 1899. As a ministers daughter, she lived there for two years before moving to Fort William, ON, later to Boissevain, MB then to Selkirk, MB, where she resided for four years. She then moved to Winnipeg residing on Carman Avenue. In the early days she worked early in the morning doing chores, walked two miles to school and would do more chores in the evenings. Her work ethic and great personal integrity were established in these formative years. Rutha lived in Kenora, ON for two years. In Kenora, she learned to play hockey. She played hockey for Wesley College in Winnipeg where she received her B.A. in 1920. After graduating from college she attended teachers normal school where she received her teaching certificate. She started her teaching career in Carman MB where she taught elementary school for two years. Rutha then taught high school in Roland, MB for two years. She returned to Winnipeg in 1924 where she taught in the North End at Lord Selkirk and Aberdeen Schools. While teaching in the North End she met many of her lifelong friends. Rutha was proud to have taught many hockey players throughout the years such as Terry Sawchuk, and Bill Isinikie who kept in touch with her and thought dearly of her. Her great teaching ethic was really established at Aberdeen school under the guidance of of a no-nonsense principal Lou Walker. Rutha was to learn a lot from Mr. Walker whom she held a lot of respect for and she learned a great deal from him. She was involved with University Womens Club, where she had many bridge-playing friends. Her holidays were spent travelling with these good friends and other teachers. Her favourite destination was Hawaii. In 1963, Rutha moved to Sprague Street and retired in 1964. A characteristic of Rutha was when she met people she hadnt seen in years, she would say "They seemed to like me, so I guess I got along all right." In the late 1980s she moved to The West Haven and in 1995 she moved to Tuxedo Villa where she resided until her passing. Gary would like to particularly thank nurses Ellen, Lydian, Isabel, Helen, Rose and Alice for their care and compassion. God bless you all. Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Look to this day For it is Life The very life of Life In its brief course lie All the realities and varieties of existence The bliss of Growth The splendour of Action The glory of Power For yesterday is but a dream And tomorrow is a vision But a day well lived Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness And every tomorrow a vision of hope Look well therefore to this day. Sanskrit Proverb Rutha would have liked this Proverb. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
