GEORGE THOMAS SIMMONS It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of George Thomas Simmons, on June 13, 2002, at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg at the age of 74. George is remembered by his wife of 53 years, Isabel; children and their families: Dianne (Ken) Smela, Christopher and Michael (Saskatoon), Fern Smeaton (Toronto), Georgina (Peter) Anderson, Emily and Sarah (Aldergrove, BC), George, Debbie, Lindsey and Krista (Calgary), Karen Simmons and Nicole (Saskatoon), Earl and his fiancee Tanis (Lynn Lake, MB) sisters, Eleanor (Al) Pollon (Courtenay, BC) and Drucilla Thibodeau (Brandon) and numerous nieces and nephews. George was born January 6, 1928, in Clanwilliam, MB. At age 16 he started working for Canadian Pacific Railway as a wiper in the shops at Minnedosa, MB. In 1952 he qualified as a Locomotive Engineer and subsequently transferred to Winnipeg, where he worked the rest of his career. In his last years he worked the Passenger on Via Rail, retiring from CP Rail with 46 years of service in March 1990. In addition to his love of the railway, George enjoyed time spent at the family farm. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for the exceptional kindness and compassionate care to George and the family. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Clanwilliam Cemetery, Clanwilliam. A reception will follow interment in Minnedosa at the Masonic Hall.
