MARY ELIZABETH (BETTY) REDMOND Peacefully, on June 17, 2002, at Riverview Health Centre, Betty Redmond passed away after a dignified battle with Alzheimers disease. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Elizabeth of Ottawa and Margaret (Greg Gillis) of Winnipeg; three granddaughters, Lindsay and Jennifer Craig and Meagan Gillis; sister Margaret Law (Gerry) of Calgary; sister-in-law Sally Dowler; numerous other relatives and a lifelong circle of devoted friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Jas. A. and Mima Dowler; brother Jim Dowler; and former husband Peter Redmond. Betty was born on March 3, 1925, in Winnipeg where she spent the majority of her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from United College and Masters of Sociology Degree from University of Toronto. After two years living in London, England after the war, where she worked at Fortnum and Masons, she returned to Winnipeg to work as a probation officer with Juvenile Court before marrying and raising her daughters. She was a devoted mother and cherished friend. Betty was an active volunteer throughout her life, giving of her time to many organizations. Next to her family, her greatest dedication was to her faith, St. Andrews River Heights United Church and the United Church of Canada. She served St. Andrews Church in many capacities and was involved with the United Church of Canada locally, provincially and nationally. Above all, Betty loved to spend time with her family and friends, and cherished her times at Lake of the Woods where she spent wonderful times with both her grandparents and grand-children. To the fortunate many who knew her, Bettys goodness, charm and wit always left a lasting impression. Even when her condition had robbed her of most of her abilities, she still exuded warmth and humour, and taught those around her that true dignity and a loving spirit will shine through even the most debilitating of diseases. The family also gratefully thanks the staff and volunteers at the Riverview Health Centre for their dedication and compassion. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 21 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, Oak Street at Kingsway. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or to St. Andrews River Heights United Church.
