The Honourable George Hepworth Lockwood, Q.C., died peacefully June 13, 2002, after a lengthy illness, in Sidney, BC. He was born on April 18, 1923, in Yorkshire, England, son of the late George and Phoebe (Bradburn) Lockwood. He attended the Kings School in Yorkshire before joining the Royal Air Force as Flying Officer (1943 to 1947), where he demonstrated his resiliency, having miraculously survived a plane crash during the Second World War. After the war, he completed his B.A. (Hons.), M.A. at University College, Oxford. Following university, he spent several years as a business executive and manager in London and Kenya where he also taught high school (1950 to 1953). He then became a Colonial Service Officer in Kenya (1953 to 1957). He left Kenya to complete his Barrister-at-law degree at Lincolns Inn London. In 1958, he moved to Winnipeg and was called to the Bar of Manitoba. He began his Canadian law career as a member of the Winnipeg firm Guy, Chappell, Guy, Wilson & Coghlin 1958 to 1961; Pitblado & Hoskin 1961 to 1966; Partner and Sr. Partner, Fillmore & Riley 1966 to 1978. He was appointed as a Judge of the County Court and Surrogate Court of Manitoba in 1978 and to the Court of Queens Bench in Manitoba in 1984 until he retired in 1994. He made significant volunteer contributions as President, The John Howard Society of Canada; President, Amnesty International Canada; President, International Commission of Jurists, (Canadian Section) Director, Canadian Judges Conference; Bencher, Law Society of Manitoba; Member National Council, Canadian Bar Association; Director, Legal Aid Manitoba; Legal Research Institute, University of Manitoba; Commissioner, Manitoba Law Reform Commission; Director, Royal Winnipeg Ballet; President, Alliance Francaise du Manitoba; National Councillor, Canadian Human Rights Foundation; Fellow, Foundation for Research, Legal Research. In 1990, he received the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour (France). After retirement, he was appointed to the Pension Appeals Board in 1995. He had a joie de vivre, was an avid reader and found great pleasure in the arts, travellingtaking his family to many parts of the world, walking, and spending summers at the family cottage, Victoria Beach, MB. He was an inspiration to all those who met him. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Lissen to whom he was married for 40 years; his children, Jon Connolly of Paris, France; Mette (Brian MacLean) of Victoria; Michael (Larissa) of London, England; Martin of Sidney; and three grandchildren, Sean and Eva of Paris and Leah of London; and his first wife Anne Connolly Mauduit of Paris, France. He will be sorely missed by family and friends from around the world. He is predeceased by his sister Norma Lockwood. A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth, RC, 10030 Third Street, Sidney, BC, on Tuesday June 25 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. I've just found out that George died in 2002, I remember him very well as he and my dad were great mates both before and during the Second World War.
