WILLIAM JOHN RUTLEDGE, C.A. William John Rutledge passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2002, peacefully at home with his family, after a courageous fight with cancer. Bill is survived by his loving wife Luella of 53 years; one son, four daughters and nine grandchildren, namely, Eleanor and Bruce McMillan (Brock and Wes), Winnipeg, Nancy and Bill Gudmandson (Scott and Michael), Sherwood Park, AB, Jim Rutledge, La Salle, MB, Betty and Bill Setka (Stephanie and Adam), Winnipeg, and Susan and Joel Arseneau (Julien, Maya and Olivier), Iles de la Madeleine, QC. Bill will be remembered by his nephews and niece, Fred and Sharon Rutledge, Ralph and Ruth Rutledge, Margaret and Jim Pragnell, and Allen and Suzanne Rutledge; also survived by sister-in-law Alice and husband Jim Sisler and family Jeff (Cathy) and Murray. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mildred Rutledge of Portage la Prairie; and brothers, Keith and Doug; and sister-in-law Lola. Bill was born in Portage la Prairie on January 10, 1923, and received his education in Portage la Prairie where upon graduation was the recipient of the Governor Generals Medal. He then articled with the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (chartered accountants), (now KPMG). After an interruption to serve in the Canadian Forces he resumed his studies and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1947. Bill was a devoted chartered accountant. His career included Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co; Underwood McLellan Associates (now UMA Engineers) F. H. Black & Co; Campbell Sharp & Associates. He retired from the Audit Service Bureau of the Government of Canada in 1988. During his career he served on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants from 1959 to 1961 and from 1964 to 1968. He was involved in many community organizations including River Heights Community Club, Red River Exhibition Board, St. Andrews River Heights United Church and Meals on Wheels. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, Oak and Kingsway. Special thanks for the care given by Dr. Ian Maxwell and Anne Anderson; Dr. Gordon Sims, Home Care nurse, Lorraine Buth. The family greatly appreciates the phone calls, cards and the many acts of kindness at this time. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Bill may be sent to CancerCare Manitoba, the Oncology Department of Victoria Hospital or any charity of your choice.
