LAURA MARSHALL Peacefully on June 24, 2002, following a 27-year battle with Parkinsons disease, Mom passed away at Bethania Personal Care Home where she had been a resident for 12 years. Predeceased by our dad Reg in 1987, Mom is lovingly remembered by her daughter Eileen (Jack Wilkinson) two sons, Robert (Jean) and Alan; and her two granddaughters, Amy and Emily. She will also be remembered by her sister Helen, brother Glen, special cousin Joy, friend Garnet, and their families. Mom was born in 1925 in Derby Township near Owen Sound, ON. Her early years were spent on the family farm. As a young woman, Mom enjoyed photography, golf, and speed skating. She also played goalie on an all-womens hockey team. Mom was the first woman in Owen Sound to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force where she worked as a radio operator in the Second World War. After graduating from the University of Guelph, she was employed at Imperial Oil in Toronto before marrying and moving to Winnipeg where she took on the full-time job of homemaker and mother to the three of us. Mom enjoyed her children and was always supportive of their endeavours. She helped us with our school work, piano practicing, and paper routes. She taught us how to play bridge and to balance the books. Her own hobbies included bridge, golf, curling, and playing the stock market. Mom did volunteer work for a variety of organizations including Bethania Personal Care Home. Despite the limitations that Parkinsons disease placed on Mom, she continued to enjoy family get-togethers. She was especially proud of her granddaughters Amy and Emily. We would like to thank all of the Bethania staff who have treated our mom with dignity and compassion for the past 12 years. A memorial service will be held at Augustine United Church, 444 River Ave., on Thursday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Parkinsons Foundation of Canada (Winnipeg Chapter).
