Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALISON GERTRUDE STEWART On June 24, 2002, at the Grace Hospital, Alison Gertrude Stewart passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her husband John in January 1995; her daughter Shirley McArthur in March 2002; and her granddaughter-in-law Betty Jean McArthur in August 2001. Mother leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory her daughter Marlene (Jack) Carnegie; son-in-law Peter McArthur; grandchildren, Karen (Barry) Spencer, Rob (Robin) Carnegie, Ian, Scott, and Kevin (Laura) McArthur; and her much loved great-grandchildren, Meghan McArthur, Sydney and Danielle Carnegie, Courtney and Craig Spencer, Kennedy and Cooper McArthur; as well as her sisters, brothers, many relatives and good friends. "Gert" was born in Winnipeg on February 13, 1909, growing up in the large "Lawrie" family on Roseberry Street. She and John were married in St. James United Church in 1930, were lifetime members of the church, Gert being a member of the U.C.W. Circle No. 9. They made their home in St. James with Shirley and Marlene growing up on Berry Street. They remained in their home until 1995. During her lifetime she was devoted to her family. Both John and Gert were very active and longtime members of the Sons of Scotland, the United Scottish Association and lifetime members of the Winnipeg Heather Belle Ladies Pipe Band. She developed a career in sales which was varied, beginning with Eatons Mail Order, Irwins Department Store in St. James, Manitoba Furniture, then on to a partnership in Shologin and Stewart Wholesale Furniture on Princess Street. Nana and Papa enjoyed a long and happy retirement together, spending many winters in Hawaii and summers at their Clear Lake cabin. The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at the Grace General Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their care and compassion given to Mother and the family. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 1:00 p.m., at St. James United Church, 234 Parkview St. In lieu of donations, should friends so desire, donations may be made in her memory to the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
