Gordon was born on July 17, 1915, in Eriksdale. Gordon took over the family lumber business from his father A.J. Smith in 1958, later assisted by his sons Ray and Lorne. As a result of his honesty, integrity and outstanding service to the Interlake customers, he was nominated "Mr. Lumberman of the Year" at the Western Retail Lumberman Association held in Vancouver in 1989. The business operated under the Smith name until the year 2000. For 20 years he also served as the Reeve of the R.M. of Eriksdale, and received a lifelong membership at the Union of Manitoba Municipalities convention. Being a very avid sports-minded person and a participant in earlier years, he was President of the Eriksdale Community Club for 30 years, and in 1978 was awarded a plaque for his devoted years of service to his community. The local Legion Auxiliary honoured Gordon with a medal for "Distinguished Community Service" for their Diamond Jubilee Year. With his expertise of the local school board, he served a term on the Board of Reference for the Department of Education. A lifelong member of the Eriksdale United Church, Gordon was devoted to his family and community. His favourite pastimes were travelling, dancing, visiting, card games and gardening. He enjoyed life to the fullest. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2 at the Eriksdale Recreational Centre with Rev. Melanie Kauppila officiating. Interment to follow in the Eriksdale Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers that day will be all of Gordons grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. Raath and Dr. Vos, nurses and staff of the E.M.
