Rick will be lovingly remembered by Louise, his devoted wife of 36 years, and sons, Christopher, Michael (and wife Christine), and Jonathan. Rick is also survived by his mother Edith Braine, sisters, Corinne (Dennis) Von Ferber of Broadview, SK, Lorraine (Ferd) Kopeschny, and Kathleen (Arnand) Le Sann of The Pas, MB; brother Douglas (Lana) Shand; brother-in-law, Peter Bangs (Lynne) of Ottawa; and numerous nephews and nieces. Rick was predeceased by his father Raymond Shand and his in-laws, Leonard and Estelle Bangs. Rick was born in Winnipeg April 23, 1943. He attended Cecil Rhodes School, Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute and graduated from the University of Manitoba (mechanical engineering) in 1966, the same year he and Louise were married. He began his long and varied career at Bristol Aerospace where he fulfilled his boyhood dream of becoming a rocket scientist. He went on to become Director of Engineering at K Cycle Engines, Head of Mechanical Engineering at Manitoba Research Council and Vice President of Cryodynamics Inc. In 1996, after being diagnosed with cancer, he started his consulting firm, Quality Management Systems, where he was instrumental in helping many Manitoba businesses receive their I.S.O. certification. He also enjoyed his affiliation with the B.D.C. Rick shared his love of learning by teaching several one-evening courses at the University of Manitoba. Rick will be remembered by all for his kindness, his wit, his inventiveness and his great dedication in all he did. Rick loved "running". He was on the university cross country team and also held the Manitoba Native record for the 440 for many years. He was a devote father who loved his sons unconditionally and was a loving husband to his soul-mate Louise. Together they lived, laughed, and loved. The family wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to Drs. Ray Singer, Jack Lezak and the dedicated home care staff. A special thank you to dearest friends, Harvey and Elsie Chippendale and Bill and Margaret Podolsky. Prayers and viewing will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1 at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway and Mass of the Resurrection at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 at St. Ignatius Church, Stafford and Corydon.
