ROMAN (DYZIO) HAWRYLIW Suddenly on Friday, June 28, 2002, at Health Sciences Centre, Roman passed away at the age of 86. Roman is survived by his sister, Marusia, who resides in Ukraine; and by several god-daughters. He was predeceased by his brothers, Rev. Constantin, Rev. Stefan and Michael, who was an engineer in Switzerland. Roman was born on July 31, 1915 in the city of Stanislaviv (today - Ivano Frankivsk), Ivano Frankivsk oblast, Western Ukraine. After finishing his education, he worked as a merchant for the oblast until 1941 when the war broke out. Roman was a veteran of the First Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army. After an honourable discharge in 1949, he came to Winnipeg, Canada, where he found work at Labatts Manitoba Brewery until he retired in 1980 at the age of 65. In his younger days, he was an avid fisherman and loved to spend summers with his friends at his campsite in Ukrainian Park. Roman spoke often of his travels with his friends to Radium Hot Springs and to Montreal for Expo. He also travelled to Ukraine and to the United States. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, and was always hopeful that he would one day win a lottery. He took a great interest in sports, especially hockey and soccer. Roman spent time reading books and newspapers and had subscriptions to many Ukrainian publications. He was a generous contributor to many Ukrainian organizations. Roman was also a member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans, Branch 141 of the Royal Canadian Legion and attended Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. Panachyda will be sung at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 (tonight) at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 4, also at the Cathedral, with Rev. Michael Kouts officiating. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shevchenko Foundation, 456 Main St. Be at peace VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
