JOHN STUART HOWDEN 1916 - 2002 Peacefully on July 2, 2002, John Howden, beloved husband of Hazel, passed away at Meadowood Manor in his 86th year. John was born in Norwood, MB to Dr. John and Maud Howden, and lived in Norwood near his family for much of his adult life. He is survived by his wife Hazel (nee Russell) daughters, Heather (Ray) Nault and Jane (Ed) Tataryn; grandson Dean (Karen) Pritchard; and brother Harold (Katie) Howden. He was predeceased by brothers, Lorrie, Jimmy and Jerry. As a young man, John worked as a surveyor in northern Manitoba and British Columbia. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. at the onset of the Second World War and spent several years in numerous Canadian postings as a flight instructor, and subsequently as a squadron leader. It was during this period that he and Hazel met and married, and began their family. He reminisced fondly of his days in the air force and was very proud of the air force cross he was awarded for his military achievements. Subsequently, he returned to university to study agriculture, and spent his latter career with Green Cross and the Province of Manitoba, culminating in rewarding years spent in planning for water and soil conservation throughout the province. Johns life was focused on his family, and he was happiest working with his hands. John and Hazel built their home on the Red River, and rebuilt it twice following major floods, before returning to Norwood. He curled with his brother Lorrie at the Heather Curling Club and joined his family at Twin Beaches, building and extending his cottage and outbuildings on a continual basis. Golf was a consuming passion, and retirement provided opportunity to pursue this hobby at home and in sunny Texas for several winters. John was past president of the St. Boniface Golf Club and the Manitoba Government Employees Association. The family is very grateful to the staff at Meadowood Manor who have cared for John with kindness and compassion for the last year. They were truly a comfort to the whole family in these last few difficult days. Cremation and a private family gathering have taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of ones choice or to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba. In care of arrangements: EDWARD J. COUTU LTD. 680 Archibald Street 253-5086
