KATHERINE EDNA BOWLES (FLETT) -
Date of Passing: Jul 01, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHERINE EDNA BOWLES (nee FLETT) 1917 - 2002 It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Katherine Edna Bowles, in her Winnipeg home, July 1, 2002. Katherine was predeceased by her parents, Edna and Alex Flett; brother Perry Alexander Flett (1988) (Marge) and Todd Flett (nephew), of Kelowna, BC; husband David Albert Bowles, (1916-1981) brother-in-law Dr. Howard Bowles (Janet). She is survived by her only son David Bowles (Sheila Hurlbert), stepgranddaughter Nicole Hurlbert (Marty), and stepgreat-granddaughter Madison, and her pet cat Elvis. Other relatives include Janet Bowles, Stephen Flett (Jan), Mark Flett (Margaret), Dean Flett (Hilary), Bruce Bowles (Marilyn) and Sheila Bowles. Katherine was a graduate of United College graduating in Arts and Science 1938. Also, she received a certificate from the University of Manitoba Alumni Association in celebration of the 60th alumni class of 1938. As well, Katherine pursued her career as a wife and mother. Together Kay and David Senior built their home which she resided in for over 50 years. This residence was her lifeline, which survived the 1950 Flood, a gathering place of numerous friends and acquaintances and neighbours. It was a great forum to discuss the social and political woes of the world. The riverbank location was especially valued as a resting point for many forms of wildlife such as Wood Ducks, Mallards, Golden Finch, Morning Doves and more than one raccoon with the occasional groundhog. Kay lived a full and rich life with the opportunity to travel all over the world, and brought home many memories. An avid story teller with attention to detail and always an underlying sense of humour. One of Kays passions was curling (President Fort Rouge Ladies Curling Club), and many, many games were skipped from the comfort of her arm chair with instructions shouted out to the television. For a short period she was also the registrar of Fort Garry Minor Hockey. Many of Winnipegs organizations and charities received unsolicited contributions given from the heart without fanfare or notoriety. Kays motto for life was "Do unto others as they would do unto you". A daughter, wife, mother, friend, a person of value and unconditional love. The family thanks the caregivers who gave their love and unselfish assistance during Kays final years. They include Dr. J. Brian Sharkey (who was a special doctor to Kay) and his staff. Also, Shirley Fraser, Shannon Robson, Pearl Henry of Provincial Home Care and Kelly Scott of Drake Medox, and as well Rachel of Victoria Life Line. There will be a private family service at which time Katherine will be cremated and her spirit set free. Her ashes will be in the company of her parents, Alex and Edna Flett and Todd Flett. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3, or Victoria General Hospital, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9.
