Date of Passing: Jul 04, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANGELA SANDY 1915-2002 On Thursday, July 4, 2002, Angela Sandy died in St. Boniface Hospital, leaving her four sons, Alex, Danny, Joe and Wally and their families with a lifetime of memories of her place in their lives as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and confidante. Predeceased by her husband Joe in 1973, she also leaves behind her sisters, Marion and Stanna and their families; her sister Marge; and sisters-in-law, Rosie and Helen and their families. Angela worked at Eatons while also raising "her boys", an affectionate description that she used throughout her life. She was an active member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church for many years and served as President of the Ukrainian Catholic Womens League. She will live on in our hearts whenever we recall early family memories of Sunday walks to Kelekis for chips, or the many family fishing trips as our families grew or long nights of card playing, or Christmas Eve with all the traditional Ukrainian food and traditions, or how she loved to cook or bake each persons "favourite" dishes. In later years, when she could no longer read or knit or visit her sisters or do so many of the things that had brought her joy earlier in life, she became a devoted sports fan. She would regale us with stories of the Blue Jays baseball players and how well each one was or was not doing or which curling event had been exciting. She was loyal whether her team was winning or not! She especially enjoyed her weekly phone calls from her granddaughters and her face would light up whenever they or other grandchildren called. She loved flowers and enjoyed visiting gardens and discussing their merits. To the end, Moms spirit shone through. With great determination, Mom stayed in her own apartment with as much independence as she could muster and with her mind clear and strong. These were among her greatest wishes and we thank Anishka and Home Care for all their help and counsel to family members and to those who treated her so well on 5A at St. Boniface Hospital. We also thank Moms friends from her apartment block and everyone who came to visit and to say their "good byes" to Mom in the hospital while she was still able to nod her recognition of them and squeeze their hands. It was a comfort to her to receive communion and last rites and it is a comfort to know that everything that could be done to ease her final days was done. A memorial service is being held on Tuesday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, people may wish to consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
