GERTRUDE STEWIN August 23, 1923 - July 5, 2002 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Gertrude Stewin announces her death on July 5, 2002, following a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her husband Wilfred in 1990. Gertrude will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters, Carolyn Salamandyk (Gordie), Judy Ostapovich (Aven) her sons, Ken Stewin (Jane) and Stan Stewin (Lori) and five grandchildren, Jason and Chad Ostapovich (Andrea) and Jessica, Karlie and Mackenzie Stewin. She also leaves to mourn her sisters, Vera Zilkie (Dan), Florence Schwark, Lilly Busch (Rein), Doris Smith (Nelson), Irene Gyles (Pat) and brother Norman Walters, sister-in-law Irene Stewin, brother-in-law Herb Stevens and many nieces and nephews whom she cared for deeply. Gertrude was born and raised in Morris, MB. In 1942 she married Wilfred John Stewin. They lived in Morris on the family farm until 1952 when they moved to Winnipeg and farmed until 1990 in Headingley. Being a farmers wife meant many long days and hard work but she always had a smile on her face and a warm meal on the stove. Her greatest joy came from her five grandchildren. Gertrude was a longtime member of McDermot Avenue Baptist Church and drew great strength through her faith. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and took great pride in her familys accomplishments. She will be remembered for her kindness, strength in faith and generous spirit. Moms thoughts on Cancer: Cancer is so limited. It cannot cripple love, shatter hope, corrode faith, eat away peace, destroy confidence, kill friendship, shut out memories, silence courage, reduce eternal life, quench the spirit, or lessen the power of the resurrection. To all friends and family for all your visits, phone calls and prayers, Thank you. A special thank you goes to the nurses in the Palliative Care Unit and the Cancer Care Unit of the Grace Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9 at 3:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Winnipeg, with Pastor Brian Russell of McDermot Avenue Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba, ON109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB., R3E 0V9 or the Grace Hospital Memorial Fund, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7.
