MARY JACUB (PROKOPCHUK)
Date of Passing: Jul 11, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY JACUB (nee PROKOPCHUK) On Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Seven Oaks Hospital, Mary Jacub passed away at the age of 88. She is survived by her loving son George. She is also mourned by her niece Joyce Wolfe who, with her husband Steve, were tireless in their support during her lengthy illness. Others in Marys close family who will miss her are Joyce and Steves daughter and son-in-law Pat and Marshall Cassie, and their children, Marys nephew Ron Prokopchuk and his wife Linda, and their children, and her niece Joyce Prokopchuk. A special mention must go to two of Marys dearest friends, Nellie Seaman, of Ontario, and Vera Horn of British Columbia, who live far away, but were never far from Marys thoughts and prayers. And to Kathy and Digna, her Home Care aides, whose help these past few years helped her live in dignity in her own home despite her failing health. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Edowkia Prokopchuk; her brothers, Wasyl, Nick, Bill and John; and her sister Pauline and her husband Peter. Mary was born in Arborg in August, 1913. She lived with her parents in the Rembrandt and Silver districts until they moved to Winnipeg in 1945. She had a hard life, having to take on adult responsibilities far too soon. She worked as a sewing machine operator for much of her life and when she retired she could look back proudly at having bought her own house, having sent a son through university, and having looked after her ailing mother in the years before her death. After her retirement she began to enjoy herself more, attending the Ukrainian festival in Dauphin and Folklorama. But she was full of surprises, as when George dropped by one day and found her and his father watching Question Period on T.V., and debating the issue of the day. The core of Marys life was family. She was never happier than when she was hosting her large family gatherings at Ukrainian Christmas and Easter with her table groaning with food and pastries. Except when an unexpected guest showed up and she could add a chair and a plate. Her Ukrainian heritage was extremely important to her. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Main Street. She attended church regularly until a stroke brought her down 3 years ago. Marys hobby was her vegetable garden. She could always be found in her backyard toiling away, battling the slugs and chasing cats. But she always had time to stop and talk with her neighbours, who have prayed for her during her recent illness. Special thanks to the nurses and aids at Seven Oaks Hospital who looked after Mary so diligently in the weeks before she left us. Prayers will be said on Friday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 1175 Main St., with Rev. Fr. Alexander Harkavyi officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. VICHNAYA PAMYAT CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
