ROY SONTAG Peacefully, at the Grace Hospital on June 14, 2002, Roy Sontag passed away. Roy leaves to cherish many wonderful memories his dear companion Maureen Bell, daughter Maureen and partner Vern Leszkovics, and son Garth. Also left to cherish childhood to retirement memories are Roys siblings: sisters, Hertha Brown (Marty) of Reno, NV, Clara Helm (Evard) of Winnipeg, Thelma Mueller (Ron) and Nina Kakoschke (Garry) of Kelowna; brothers, Fred (Selene) of Vancouver, Earl (Lynda) of Courtenay and Victor (Maureen) of Mitchell, MB; as well as many nieces, nephews and relatives, particularly the recently discovered cousins and families in Germany; namely, cousin Martha Follak and family, cousin Ernst Follak and family, Waldemar Follak, Elisabeth Malle and family, Helga Kitzmann, and aunt (tante) Herta Follak. Roy grew up in the Moosehorn area of Manitobas Interlake. Roy graduated from high school and began his teaching career as a permit teacher in the Parker School District (a one-room rural school, grades 1-6) in the same Interlake area. Following a year of teacher training at the Provincial Normal School, Roy taught grades 5-8 at Grosse Isle, MB for four years. He then relocated to the St. Boniface School Division where he taught Grade 8, physical education, and high school at Provencher Collegiate. He began his career as Principal at Beliveau Elementary School in Windsor Park in 1960. Beliveau School became a Junior High School in 1963 and Roy remained there until 1969. He then transferred to Windsor Park Collegiate and remained there for 23 years until retirement in 1992. Over the many years of public school service, he was always devoted to his schools, students, staffs, professional organization, and communities. Although he spent countless hours in school related activities and functions, Roy found time to pursue his fondest interests: wilderness canoeing and fishing with special partners Neil Friesen and Ray Trudel, family camping and travelling throughout Manitoba and Canada, automobile restoration, building projects, deer and moose hunting with his longtime hunting partners, brother-in-law Evard Helm and Bill Sawka, cottage life at Grindstone, curling with the St. Boniface Teachers Curling Club and the Heather Seniors, and being a Winnipeg Blue Bomber season ticket holder from 1959 with longtime friend Bill Dutka. Roy would want to extend a final fond farewell to the many students, teachers, parents, friends and acquaintances that crossed his lifes path and enriched it. As always, he would extend wishes to all for good health and much happiness. Thank you to Dr. Cho and Dr. Krahn and to all the workers associated with the Manitoba Palliative Care Program for their incredible care and support. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Friday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Green Acres Memorial Gardens and Funeral Chapel, No. 1 Hwy. East at Navin Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windsor Park Collegiate Scholarship Fund, in care of The Principal, Windsor Park Collegiate, 1015 Cottonwood Rd., Winnipeg, MB.
