GUDRUN GERT McWHIRTER (nee BENJAMINSON) Gudrun McWhirter passed away suddenly Saturday morning, July 20, 2002 at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1906, she was brought to Canada by her parents Tomas and Soffia in 1909. She grew up in Arborg, MB and Elfros, SK moving to Winnipeg as an adult where she married and raised her family moving to Thunder Bay, ON in 1950. She retired with her husband to Victoria, BC in 1974 returning to Winnipeg as a widow in 1984 taking up residence in Maples Personal Care Home in 1998. Gudrun was predeceased by her husband Robert John; sister Bryndis; brothers, Bergur and Halldor. She is survived by her son Duncan (Jody) in Victoria and daughter Judy (Fred) Glass in Winnipeg; grandsons, Tom (Paula), David (Lisa), Jeffrey (Christine) and five great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Royal Oak Cemetery in Victoria. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart Foundation.
