NICOLA GUFFEI October 3, 1925 - July 21, 2002 It is with great sorrow that the Guffei family announces the peaceful passing of Nicola Guffei into the hands of God, at the age of 76. Left to remember him and carry on for him are his wife of 48 years, Angelina; his children, Luciano (Barbara) and Anna (John Gabriele) grandchildren, Nicholas, Amanda, and Ashley Guffei and Jeffrey and Jennifer Gabriele (Nonno always had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Guido Biondi and wife Janice; three sisters-in-law, Christina Guffei, Olympia Guffei and Evelina Biondi; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, multi-generations of friends and two dear nieces, Laureen (Biondi) Wilson and Joanna Biondi. Nicola was predeceased by his parents, Angelo and Giovanna; his brothers, Michelle, Giuseppe, and Angelo; his two sisters, Anna and Maria; and his two brothers-in-law, Carmine and Giuseppe Biondi. Nicola was born on October 3, 1925, in Castelpetroso, Italy. After surviving the Second World War and the depressing post war years in Italy, Nicola immigrated to Canada in 1953 searching for a new life and future for his wife and family. Nicolas first employment was with the C.P.R. main line Ignace to Winnipeg. After three years with the C.P.R. Nicola changed his profession to the tile industry where, learning the trade from his brothers Giuseppe and Angelo, he became one of Winnipegs best and most sought after tile setters working for Memorial Marble & Tile, Sprange & Son, Fabris & Watts, and J & L Tile. A devoted husband and hardworking father, he was a great provider and immensely proud of his family and grandchildren. His hobbies included his garden and vines, tinkering, playing Scopa and making wine and deli meats from scratch. Nicola had a great memory for detail, which made him a great storyteller. In later years diabetes robbed him of his vitality, but he faced it with courage and dignity. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m., at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave., with Fr. Sam Argenziano. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m., also at Holy Rosary Church, with Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating. Entombment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave. Pallbearers will be Nicholas Guffei, Jeffrey Gabriele, John DeFrancesco, Dr. Gregory Wilson, Bryan Zachary, and Romeo Guffei. Honorary pallbearers are Guido Biondi and John Gabriele. "We will forever miss you, your kind heart and loving eyes, we love you Dad!" In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in memory of Nicola to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6, or the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8.
