Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER W. BARKMAN May 26, 1924 - July 22, 2002 On Monday morning, Peter Barkman died and went to be with the Lord. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Helen; his brothers, Harvey and Lawrence (Doris). He leaves to mourn his passing his former wife Hilda; his sons, Douglas (Holly), Robert (Lori) and daughter Nancy (Frank) grandchildren, Jasha and Alexis; and stepgrandchildren, Ian, Joel, Rosalyn and Avril; siblings, Mintie, Levi (Laura), Gordon (Norma), Rose (Jac), Shirley (Allan), John (Joanne), Betty Anne; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad grew up in Steinbach where he held numerous jobs including teaching in a one room school house. During the war years, he was in the Royal Canadian Airforce. In the 1950s he worked in Niagara Falls returning to Steinbach to help run the family farm. In 1962, Peter moved his family to Winnipeg. For the next 18 years, he worked mainly as a truck driver. In 1980, Dad relocated to Parkhill, ON and helped run a residential home for people with mental health disabilities. He returned to Winnipeg in 1996 and slowly developed Alzheimers Disease. He spent his last four years at Deer Lodge Centre where he received excellent care. The family would like to thank all the staff on T3 for their compassionate care. Dad was at times sensitive and at other times outspoken. He did not accept easy answers. His faith was a source of strength and he was very interested in the challenges of the Christian faith. Dad liked all sports. At various times in his life he played hockey, baseball and golf. He always loved watching football, especially the Bombers. Dad will be remembered as an extremely hard worker and as someone who stood up for what he believed in. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., R3C 4O2. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held at the Worship Centre at Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Ave., Thursday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m., Chaplain Aubrey Hemminger presiding. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you.
