PERCY HAILSTONE Peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, Percy Hailstone passed away at the Selkirk General Hospital, with family at his side, at the age of 70 years. Percy will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Edeline. Also left to mourn his passing are his children, Pauline (Doug), Robert (Bonnie), Ian (Susie) and grandchildren, Candice, Jordan, Tyler, Gerald, Amber, and "little terror" Jennifer. Also survived by his sisters, Doreen and Marjory; and his brothers, Kenneth and John, all in England. Percy was born on April 22, 1932 in Hull, England. He grew up on the streets during the Second World War, and eventually joined the British Army himself as a member of the Coldstream Guards. He was stationed throughout the Middle East as part of the Elite Special Services Unit (SAS). He returned home to the post of Drill Sergeant of the Color Guard, guarding such places as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London in his bearskin. Whilst in the Army, he also distinguished himself athletically as a member of the British Army Rugby Team, and Army Champion in running and boxing. In 1954, Percy married Edeline Lilian Richardson and started a family. He spent several years working as a gardener, before going into his chosen profession of nursing. Percy and Edeline immigrated to Canada in 1967, accepting a job at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. He worked his way up the ranks of psychiatric nursing, eventually settling in the area of administration. Over the years, Percy had been involved in numerous hobbies and interests, displaying incredible talent and work ethic. Percy was instrumental as the driving force for the start of the Selkirk Minor Soccer Association. He then moved his coaching talents to the world of hockey, where he produced numerous champions - both in character and results. Percy always believed every athlete on his teams deserved his time, from the weakest to the strongest. Percy was also very proud of his time as a dog breeder. Wyke Kennels built a reputation throughout North America as the home of champion Bull Terriers. An avid and exceptional artist, Percy was self taught at all he attempted. A legacy of beautiful carvings and paintings are left for all to enjoy. Percy will be sadly missed by his family and friends, in particular, the Coffee Group, the guys at Big Rig Collision and the Brain Dead Investment Group. The family would like to thank the nurses of Selkirk General Hospital, Dr. Fuchs, Dr. Demsas and all who visited for your care and attention. In lieu of flowers, a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Station Main, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9, or Alzheimer Society, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
