Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLARA HAMOVICH October 6, 1915 - July 25, 2002 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Clara was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Mary Freed; and by her brother Morris Freed. She is survived by her brother Ike Freed (Ethel) and her sister Gert Markell. She is also survived by her husband Ralph; her three children, Mira (Martin) Buchwald, Dr. Jerry Hamovich (Penny Mason) and Keren Freed; by her nine grandchildren, Robyn (Jeffrey) Lieberman, Jonathan Buchwald (Susan), Rina Freed (Leo Frid), Leanne Hamovich, Debra MacKillop and Jasmine Freed; and by her three great-grandchildren, Amy, Joshua and Noah Lieberman. Highlighting an exemplary life for all of her 86 years, Claras two main priorities - consistently maintained throughout her life - were family and helping those less fortunate than she was. From early on, Clara was involved in Jewish life, becoming a member of Young Judea in her teen years, and rising to become a leader of her local club. Young Judea turned out to be a major involvement for Clara because this is where she met her husband Ralph whom she married in 1939. Clara was a life member of Hadassah, a founding life member and past-president of Brandeis Lodge Ladies Auxiliary, and a recipient of the "Lady of the Year" award. For many years she was part of the canvassing team of the Combined Jewish Appeal. She was also awarded the "200 hour pin" for her work with the Winnipeg Volunteer Bureau. Funeral services were conducted on July 28, 2002 by Rabbi Alan Green and Rabbi Louis Berkal at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, with interment at Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Inspiring remarks were delivered by Claras grandson, Jonathan Buchwald. Active pallbearers were Jonathan Buchwald, Martin Buchwald, Barry Corey, Aron Lieberman, Jeffrey Lieberman, Morris Raizen and Dr. Alan Schweid. Shiva was observed at the home of Mira and Martin Buchwald. A true "Gute Neshama", who lived for the privilege of doing for others, Claras death leaves a void in the hearts of her family, her friends, and the entire community. May the memory of Clara Hamovich prove to be a blessing and inspiration for all future generations to come. Contributions in Claras memory can be made to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 477-7525.
