VIARA (VI) MCVICAR (nee HORN)
Born: Apr 20, 1910
Date of Passing: Jul 25, 2002
Offer Condolences or MemoryVIARA (VI) McVICAR (nee HORN) 1910 - 2002 On Thursday, July 25, 2002, Viara McVicar passed away peacefully at the Morris Hospital in Morris, MB, at the age of 92. Vi was born on April 20, 1910, at Kingsley (near LaRiviere), MB. Following completion of "Normal School" (teachers college) in Manitou, MB, she embarked on a long and rewarding teaching career, beginning with assignments in several small Manitoba communities. In about 1932 she accepted a teaching position in Arnaud, MB. It was there that she met Donald McVicar and they were married in 1935. Vi put her teaching career "on hold" in 1940 so that she could focus on raising her children. In 1944 Viara and Donald moved to Dominion City, MB where they lived and raised their family throughout most of the next 40 years. In 1954, with her youngest child now of school age, Vi resumed her teaching career. She taught in Dominion City for the next 12 years, and then in Winnipeg for an additional six years. She retired in 1972, leaving a legacy of grateful students many of whom remember her as "Super Teacher". In 1984, five years after Donalds death, Vi began a new lifestyle - making her home in Winnipeg in the summers and in Alamo, TX in the winters. In Texas she met and made many new friends from all over North America. One of those new friends was John Wilson of St. Paul, MN, and they soon developed a very special and dear relationship. Throughout the last 15 years, Vi and John had been constant and close companions, travelling and enjoying their many interests together, in Texas in winters and up north in summers. In 1990 Mom chose the Meadowood Manor in St. Vital to be her new Winnipeg residence, and in the ensuing 12 years she established many more dear friendships with her fellow residents, the staff and caregivers at Meadowood. Vis many relatives and friends will miss her and cherish their memories of her, especially her children, Carol and Vernon Wilkinson of Ridgeville, MB, Earle and Jeanine McVicar of Calgary, AB, Leona and Brian Scobie of Sherwood Park, AB; her grandchildren, Tim and Debbie Wilkinson, Rick Wilkinson and Laura St. Vincent, Mark McVicar, Tyler McVicar and Jill Sutherin, Corey and Isabel Scobie, Jana Scobie; her two great-grandchildren, Annette and Savannah; her brother Cecil Horn and his wife Peggy; and her dear friend John Wilson; and special companion Anne Nickel. Vi was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Fred Horn; her sister Alma; and her brother Walter. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dominion City United Church in Dominion City, MB, with Revs. Myrna and Bob Stark officiating. Interment will follow at the Dominion City Cemetery. Friends wishing to do so may contribute, in lieu of flowers, to the Dominion City United Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of their choice. Arrangements entrusted to Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona, MB.
