Gladys was born in Winnipeg on September 14, 1924 and in her teens moved to a farm near the city. On her return to Winnipeg, she was attracted to The Salvation Army and from that point on her life revolved around her church. Gladys became a Salvation Army soldier, sang in the choir, was the librarian of the ladies group (Home League) and a very active member of the League of Mercy, which visited people in hospitals and nursing homes. She enjoyed worship and witness and especially times spent at the camps at Sandy Hook and Woodlands. She befriended many Salvation Army officers, making them her "family" and her photo albums and autograph book are filled with reminders of those friendships. Gladys was known to walk downtown for lunch at Eatons every day and almost always wore her Salvation Army uniform. She was never shy about engaging people in conversation and made an impact on many. Little is know of her family but she was pre-deceased by her parents, a brother George, and sister Daisy. In 1991 when her health began to deteriorate, Gladys moved to Golden West Lodge and endeared herself to residents and staff alike. When she first moved in she was still able to participate actively and was known to put on her uniform and go out to visit other people. She spent hours knitting and crocheting and loved to attend bowling, baking and craft programs. The past few years brought severe health limitations and Gladys had to rely on others to visit her. She continued to attend chapel services for as long as possible, being comforted by the songs and scriptures so familiar to her. Gladys will be missed by all that knew her, especially her friends at Salvation Army on Hampton Street and all at Golden West Centennial Lodge. A private interment will take place in Brookside Cemetery on Wednesday, July 31. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31 in the Chapel at Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., with Majors John and Elsie Shatto officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gladys memory to Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg, MB, R2Y 0S8.
