NADIA REED (nee RUTA) 1917 - 2002 "MOM" Passed away peacefully at Holy Family Nursing Home on Saturday, July 27, 2002 with her family at her side. Predeceased by her parents, Peter and Sophie Ruta; brothers, Zenon, Nestor and Walter; sister Natalia; son Claude; and in a tragic accident first husband Mike Sirant in 1946; and second husband Joe Reed in 1966. Left to mourn her passing are son Don Reed (Patti Sullivan) daughter Betty; brother William of Calgary; aunt and uncle Mary and Nick Ruta of Selkirk; the Sirant family; cousin Helen Mason of Winnipeg; cousin Jim Barrett and wife Shirley; nieces and nephews, especially Lorne, George and Robert Proulx; and numerous friends and relatives including friend Luella Sturtz of Kelowna, Alice Klassen, and the Kawuza and Antonick families. Mom was born in Winnipegs north end and as a child and teen was active in the Ukrainian Catholic community. As a young woman working in Winnipeg she enjoyed the friendship and support of her aunt Lena and uncle Jim Barrett. She married Mike Sirant in 1939, moved to Fort Rouge where her son Donny was born. After Mikes death, she married Joe and Betty and Claude were born. She belonged to Holy Family Parish and was the first president of its Catholic Womens League. After Joes passing she learned to drive and worked in sales. She loved curling and was active in various curling leagues and Legion activities. Her children were her pride and joy and she loved the pets in her life especially Mctavish. During her retirement, she spent many happy winters in Arizona. She continued to cook fine meals for her children and lived independently for many years. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of St. Francis Unit, Holy Family Nursing Home and to the Sirant family for the support given to us. Prayers will be held Tuesday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday, July 31 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church with Lorne Proulx, Robert Proulx, Mike Sirant, Jim Burnosky, Tom Antonick, Larry Sirant serving as pallbearers. Nadia will be laid to rest in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow at the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. Mom we will miss you!
