OLGA MATKALUK (PHILIPCHUK)
Date of Passing: Jul 27, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLGA MATKALUK (nee PHILIPCHUK) It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother and baba. Olga Matkaluk passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002 at St. Boniface Hospital after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Olga was born in Cowan, MB to Thomas and Frances Philipchuk. She was one of six siblings. Mom was raised in Cowan and lived there until she married Michael Matkaluk and moved to Flin Flon, MB. After a short stay in Flin Flon they moved to Winnipeg where Mom had resided in Norwood for more than 50 years. Although primarily a mother and homemaker who was deeply dedicated to her family, Olga worked part time for the T. Eaton Company until her retirement. She loved working in her yard and garden. She also enjoyed travelling and had travelled extensively throughout the United States (including Hawaii), Canada and Mexico. However her greatest joy came from her family. Mom never completely overcame the loss of her husband Michael in 1987. She did however devote her considerable energy to caring for her grown children. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Gary Matkaluk of Winnipeg, his wife Joan and their children Tammy and Regan; as well as her younger son Dr. Richard Matkaluk of Carlsbad, CA, his wife Connie and their daughter Lauren. For each of the last 15 years Mom would look forward to winter with great anticipation since she would travel to Carlsbad to be with and care for this branch of her family. She is also survived by her sister and best friend Sonia Hladun (Ben) and by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Frances Philipchuk; sisters, Mary Harapiak and Josephine Lewicki; and brothers, Stephen and Michael Philipchuk. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, July 31, at 7:00 p.m. in the Edward J. Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. Divine Liturgy will be held on Thursday, August 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Vladimir & Olga Cathedral, 114 McGregor St. with Rev. John Mostivsky officiating. Interment will follow in the Waverley Memorial Gardens. A special thanks to the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for their care. Arrangements have been entrusted to: EDWARD J. COUTU LTD. 680 Archibald Street 253-5086
