GEORGE EDWARD ALLEN Ed was born February 22, 1943 in Ronan, MT and died peacefully July 30, 2002 in Winnipeg, MB. A gifted teacher, Ed was a professor of psychology at the University of Winnipeg for over 30 years. He believed in the potential of each individual to fully develop into who they could be and was a mentor to many. It was not unusual for students to connect with him many years later and tell him how his courses had changed their life. A complex man, with a sharp mind, keen wit, incredible sense of humour, genuine interest in others, he was a good listener and was deeply spiritually connected. He read voraciously anything from the mundane to the profound, had a deep love of music, especially country western, was a huge sports fan, particularly his Boston Celtics, New York Yankees and, unbelievably, of television wrestling. Recently Ed thrived on discovering his artistic side in classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Eds greatest legacy is the integrity with which he lived his life and the compassion he felt for all sentient beings. He will be deeply missed. Left to mourn their loss and celebrate Eds life are his beloved wife Karen Fletcher; his kid-pups, Cassie and Maggie; his mother LaDynne Allen of Utah; his brother Rick Allen (and Leanne) of Utah; his brother Rob Allen (and Barb) of Utah; his in-laws, Fletch and Donna Fletcher of Manitoba, Barb Fletcher (and Eric Pallibroda) of British Columbia, Kim Denomme (and Roy) of Ontario; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father George Allen; his sister Sandra Allen; and his kid-pups, Deva, Tykie, Billie and Nikki. We would like to thank several individuals for the care they provided to Ed. Deep gratitude to Nurse Audra Nesbitt-Hume, Nurse Debbie Carranza and the staff of GD4, Health Sciences Centre for their skilled, compassionate and respectful care while Ed was dying. Thank you to his family physician Dr. Bruce MacLeod, to his hepatology team at the Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Barry Rosser and Nurse Rose Bazylewski and to Nurse Cheryl Dale of the London University Hospital liver transplant team. You are welcome to join us in celebrating Eds life at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 2, in the Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall, University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave. If friends so desire, donations in Eds memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • When he was my professor, he was running a group and I was part of that group. One of the things I had mentioned when we were talking about personal fears was that my mother would die because I didn’t think I could live without her. Not two weeks later, my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer and probably had no more than three weeks to live. When professor Allen heard that my mother was dying, he and another student came to the hospital and made sure that I was OK gave me hugs and said that he would fix it with my other professors because it was the end of the year and I was supposed to graduate that I could Miss taking exams and just go on what my score was up to that point. He took stress off my shoulders because it was the last thing my mom wanted was for me to graduate and have my degree. This is late because I never knew that professor Allen had passed away until Tonight when I was wondering, whatever happened to him. I found his obituary and it saddened me. He was a great man, a great professor. - Posted by: Sandy Lafontaine (Former student) on: Aug 27, 2025
