Offer Condolences or MemoryJUDGE GORDON CAMPBELL CHOWN His Honour Judge Gordon Campbell Chown, passed away July 31, 2002 at the Brantford General Hospital and surrounded by family, before his 80th birthday August 15. Born in Winnipeg in 1922, he was educated at Queens University, Kingston, and the University of Manitoba Law School in Winnipeg. Before attending university, he served in the Second World War as a Staff Captain with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division Headquarters in the United Kingdom and European theatres of operation. After graduation from Law School, he practiced in Winnipeg. During this time he was elected as an Alderman for the City of Winnipeg. He subsequently became a Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, and served in the Government from 1957 until 1963. In 1961 he was appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons. Following this period in Ottawa, he lived in Toronto, and was an early participant in the founding of the York County Legal Aid Plan. In 1972 he was appointed as a Provincial Judge, and acted in this capacity in Toronto and Hamilton until his retirement in 1992. He was a life long member of the Anglican Church of Canada, a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Toronto, and of the University of Manitoba Alumnae Association. As a past member of the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club and Winnipeg Winter Club, he was an avid sailor and figure skater. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Catherine and his three step-children, Diane (Neil) Carscadden of Seattle, WA, Tom (Mary Anne) of Toronto, Jamie (Sue) of Brantford; and eight treasured grandchildren, Christina, Scott, Laura, Aaron, Edward, Jamie, John and Alison. He is also survived by his sister Mrs. Peter Morse (Margaret) of Winnipeg, as well as several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing him were his parents, Dr. Gordon Chown and Mrs. Chown of Winnipeg; a brother, Flight Lieutenant Douglas Chown (1944) and a sister, Mrs. William Barrett (Patricia) of Toronto in 1965. Family and friends will be received at the BECKETT-GLAVES FAMILY FUNERAL CENTRE, 88 Brant Avenue, Brantford, ON (519) 752-4331 on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Grace Anglican Church, 15 Albion St., Brantford on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Archdeacon Peter Townshend officiating. Cremation will follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Grace Anglican Church Endowment Fund, Brantford.
